Faculty of Nursing UNPAD Researchers Explore Nursing Interventions to Enhance Quality of Life for Parents of Children with Thalassemia Major
Thalassemia major is a chronic hereditary blood disorder that requires lifelong treatment and imposes significant emotional, social, and financial burdens, not only on affected children but also on their parents. Recognizing the central role of nurses in supporting these families, a recent scoping review published in BMC Nursing examined the range of nursing interventions that can improve the quality of life for parents caring for children with this condition.
The study, led by Ai Mardhiyah, S.Kp.,M.Kes, Ph.D., and colleagues, from Universitas Padjadjaran. Using a comprehensive literature search across CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, the review synthesized evidence from nine original research articles published between 2015 and 2024.
Findings revealed that nursing interventions such as positive thinking therapy, family empowerment programs, counseling, and structured educational support significantly improved parents’ coping abilities, emotional well-being, and overall life quality. Active parental participation, sustained healthcare support, and accessible educational resources emerged as critical factors for success.
The authors emphasized the importance of a holistic nursing approach that addresses not only the physical care of thalassemia patients but also the emotional and social needs of their families. They recommend further research to evaluate the long-term impact of these interventions and explore culturally tailored strategies that meet the specific needs of diverse family contexts.
