Enhancing Family Support for Severe Mental Illness Patients through Motivational Interviewing: Insights from Universitas Padjadjaran Nursing Research
Severe mental illness (SMI) presents ongoing challenges not only for patients but also for their families, who play a crucial role in supporting medication adherence and daily functioning. Researchers from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran, Neni Rochmayati Satuhu, Neti Juniarti, S.Kp., M.Kes., MNurs., PhD., and Efri Widianti, S.Kep.,Ners.,M.Kep., Sp.Kep.Jiwa., conducted a quasi-experimental study to evaluate the effectiveness of family motivational interviewing (FMI) in empowering families to better motivate their loved ones with SMI.
The study, published in 2025, involved 62 families registered at Babakan Sari Public Health Center, Indonesia. After a four-week FMI intervention, families showed significant improvement in their ability to encourage medication adherence and daily living activities in individuals with SMI compared to controls (p < 0.01).
These findings highlight the critical role of community nursing and family-centered interventions in mental health care. This approach supports better health outcomes for people with SMI, contributing to Sustainable Development Goal 3 , Good Health and Well-being.
