Community Volunteers’ Role in Detecting and Preventing Stunting in Pregnant Women: Insights from Indonesia
Stunting remains a significant public health challenge in Indonesia, impacting the long-term development and productivity of future generations. Understanding the frontline efforts to detect and prevent stunting during pregnancy is essential to addressing this issue effectively.
A qualitative study conducted by Sukmawati,S.Sos.,S.Kep.,Ners.,M.Kes, Dr. Yanti Hermayanti, S.Kp.,MNm, Dr. Eddy Fadlyana, dr.,SpA(K), M.Kes., Indra Maulana, S.Kep,Ners.,M.M., and Prof. Henny Suzana Mediani S.Kp., M.Ng., Ph.D., from Universitas Padjadjaran explored the lived experiences of community volunteers in Garut Regency, West Java. Through in-depth interviews with 15 volunteers, the study identified four key themes: challenges in detecting stunting in pregnant women, effective communication with pregnant women and their families, the need for enhanced knowledge on stunting prevention, and the critical role and responsibility of health cadres in community health efforts.
These findings emphasize the vital contribution of community volunteers in stunting prevention programs and highlight opportunities to strengthen their training and support systems. This work supports Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) by addressing nutritional challenges that affect maternal and child health.
