UNPAD Researchers Explore the Emotional Journey of Indonesian Widows After Losing Their Husbands to Critical Illness
A qualitative case study conducted by Ayu Prawesti Priambodo, S.Kep.Ners.,M.Kep. and colleagues from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran. Using in-depth interviews and thematic analysis, the researchers explored the lived experiences of Indonesian wives after losing their husbands to acute medical conditions. The study revealed four core themes: experiencing the pain of the loss, searching for the meaning of being lost, embracing the new being, and exploring unmet needs in a widow’s life. These findings reflect how grieving is not only an emotional process but also a social and existential journey shaped by gender, family roles, and cultural expectations.
The women interviewed described grief as overwhelming, yet often hidden. While society expects them to “be strong,” these widows expressed a deep need for emotional support, understanding, and companionship during their bereavement. Many found purpose through their children, who became the reason to re-engage with life after a period of emptiness and isolation.
This research provides valuable insights into the psychological and social impacts of loss, especially among women, and contributes to the broader goals of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality). It calls for more compassionate, gender-sensitive approaches to post-loss care in Indonesia’s healthcare system, particularly in nursing and mental health services.
