Faculty of Nursing Universitas Padjadjaran Identifies Risk Factors for Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation in Post-CABG Patients
Prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is linked to increased complications, longer hospital stays, and higher mortality rates. However, a lack of consensus on how PMV is defined, with reported time limits ranging from more than twelve hours to more than forty-eight hours, has hindered the development of standardized care protocols.
A recent scoping review led by Regina Indah Kumalasari from Master Study Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran, in collaboration with Cecep Eli Kosasih, S.Kp.,MNS, Ph.D. and Ayu Prawesti Priambodo, S.Kep.Ners.,M.Kep. from Department of Critical Care and Emergency Nursing, Faculty of Nursing UNPAD, Synthesized findings from eight studies involving over 12,000 patients. Their analysis revealed that poor preoperative heart function, complex surgical procedures, acute kidney injury, and severe postoperative infections such as mediastinitis are critical factors influencing prolonged ventilator dependence.
The authors emphasize the importance of establishing clear definitions and evidence-based guidelines for PMV to improve early risk identification, guide interventions, and enhance surgical recovery. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), reflecting UNPAD’s commitment to advancing healthcare quality and patient safety through research.
