Understanding Anxiety in Adolescents Surviving Thalassemia Major in Indonesia: Key Psychological Factors Unveiled
Thalassemia major, a chronic blood disorder requiring lifelong transfusions, not only impacts physical health but also poses significant psychological challenges, particularly anxiety. Researchers from Universitas Padjadjaran, led by Prof. Henny Suzana Mediani S.Kp, M.Ng, Ph.D., and Bhakti Kencana University, conducted an important study investigating the factors influencing anxiety levels among adolescent survivors of thalassemia major in West Java, Indonesia.
This quantitative study involving 122 adolescents revealed that a majority (70.5%) experience mild anxiety. Notably, body image dissatisfaction was identified as the strongest predictor of anxiety, increasing the risk of severe anxiety by more than 11 times. Self-esteem and coping mechanisms also showed significant relationships with anxiety, whereas social support did not have a notable effect.
These findings emphasize the urgent need for holistic psychological support programs targeting body image concerns, self-esteem enhancement, and coping skill development to improve mental health outcomes in this vulnerable population.
This research aligns closely with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages, especially in addressing the mental health needs of adolescents with chronic diseases.
