Faculty of Nursing Universitas Padjadjaran Explores Determinants of Caregiver Burden in Palliative and Chronic Illness
A new study led by Prof. Hartiah Haroen, S.Kp.,MNg.,M.Kes, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran, examines the multifaceted factors influencing caregiver burden among families caring for patients with palliative and chronic illnesses.
Through a cross-sectional study of 71 caregivers, the research found that more than half experienced a high burden, with significant links to marital status, caregiving duration, health insurance availability, and caregiver attitudes. While loss of privacy was less commonly reported, feelings of inadequacy in providing care were widespread.
The findings point to the critical role of psychosocial and structural factors in shaping caregiver well-being. Recommendations include integrating psychosocial support, ensuring financial security, and delivering targeted caregiver education, efforts that align directly with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 1: No Poverty.
