Faculty of Nursing UNPAD Contributes to International Research on Psychometric Properties of Ageism Assessment Instruments
As the global population ages, the need to address ageism, a form of discrimination based on age, has become increasingly urgent. Reliable and valid instruments to measure ageism are critical for promoting healthy ageing and shaping effective policies. A new systematic review, published in the International Journal of Older People Nursing, evaluates the psychometric properties of tools designed to assess ageism, shedding light on their strengths and limitations.
Iqbal Pramukti, S.Kep.,Ners.,M.Sc., Ph.D., from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), in collaboration with National Tainan Junior College of Nursing Taiwan, National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, Hong Kong Polytechnic University Hong Kong, National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom, and Kaohsiung Medical University Taiwan, contributed to this comprehensive study that systematically analyzed instruments using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist.
The review examined 338,180 records, ultimately including 20 studies that evaluated instruments measuring different dimensions of ageism. Eight studies assessed self-directed ageism, while twelve focused on attitudes toward older adults. Internal consistency was tested in 18 studies, but only three assessed cross-cultural validity, and none achieved high methodological quality in content validity.
This aligns strongly with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being and SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities.
