Universitas Padjadjaran Study Reveals Gaps in Family Caregivers’ Knowledge and Practice on Pressure Injury Prevention in Older Adults
A recent cross-sectional study led by Sheizi Pristasari, S.Kep.,Ners.,M.Kep.Ph.D., in collaboration with international colleagues from Maastricht University, Medical University of Graz, and Universitas Riau, investigated the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of family caregivers on preventing pressure injuries (PIs) in community-dwelling older adults in Bandung, West Java.
Surveying 267 family caregivers using the validated KAP-PI questionnaire, the study found that although most caregivers (94.4%) held positive attitudes toward PI prevention, more than half (61.0%) had insufficient knowledge, and 41.2% demonstrated inadequate preventive practices. Statistical analysis showed that better knowledge and positive attitudes were significantly correlated with improved preventive practices (p < 0.05).
These findings emphasize the urgent need for targeted educational programs and professional support to empower family caregivers in their crucial role of preventing pressure injuries in home care settings. This aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by promoting healthy aging and community health.
