Understanding Parental Communication Practices to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse: Insights from Indonesia

Preventing child sexual abuse (CSA) requires effective communication between parents and children, an area where knowledge and cultural context play crucial roles. A recent cross-sectional study led by Dr. Tetti Solehati, S.Kp.,M.Kep. and colleagues from Universitas Padjadjaran, in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Hermina Kemayoran Hospital, and Universitas Indonesia, explores the determinants of parental communication practices related to CSA prevention in West Java, Indonesia.

Surveying 207 parents in Bandung and Sumedang regencies, the study reveals that despite high parental engagement, many parents demonstrate insufficient knowledge and communication skills regarding CSA prevention. Importantly, parental knowledge and ethnicity (predominantly Sundanese) were found to significantly influence communication practices.

These findings underscore the need for culturally tailored, knowledge-based interventions to enhance parental skills in discussing CSA prevention, ensuring children’s safety in diverse sociocultural settings.

This research advances the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16, ending abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and all forms of violence against children, by providing evidence for targeted prevention strategies.
