Health cadres’ experiences in detectingand preventing childhood stuntingin Indonesia: a qualitative study

Strengthening Community Health: Universitas Padjadjaran’s Research on Health Cadres and Stunting Prevention

A new study led by Sukmawati, S.Sos., S.Kep., Ners., M.Kes. from Universitas Padjadjaran, together with a research team, explores on the pivotal role of health cadres in detecting and preventing stunting in children.

Through in-depth qualitative interviews with 15 health cadres across West Java, the study identified four major themes: the daily challenges faced in early detection, the importance of effective communication with families, the need for enhanced knowledge and skills, and the central role of cadres in community-based prevention. These insights emphasize that empowering and training cadres is not only crucial for early awareness but also for fostering family and community engagement in combating childhood stunting.

This research contributes directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2: Zero Hunger, SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, and SDG 4: Quality Education), highlighting the importance of community-based approaches in addressing child malnutrition. By equipping cadres with knowledge and communication skills, Indonesia can take stronger steps toward breaking the cycle of stunting and ensuring a healthier future generation.
