Empathy Training Halves Bullying Among Incarcerated Youth, Study by Universitas Padjadjaran Finds
A new study led by Rohman Hikmat from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran, in collaboration with Prince of Songkla University (Thailand), STIKEP PPNI Jabar, and RS Universitas Padjadjaran, tested the impact of an empathy-based module on bullying behavior among juvenile inmates in Bandung.
Conducted in Bandung, the quasi-experimental study involved 54 juvenile inmates divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group participated in a 6-session program involving lectures, empathy videos, storytelling, and reflection.
Key Findings:
- Bullying behavior decreased from 70.4% to 36.7% in the intervention group.
- No significant change was observed in the control group.
- Emotional insight and perspective-taking improved noticeably post-intervention.
This research provides critical insights for correctional nursing and rehabilitative programs in Indonesia, supporting SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by promoting safer, more empathetic correctional environments for adolescents.
