Quality of Life, Self-Esteem, and Stress among First-Semester Student Nurses in Indonesia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Faculty of Nursing Universitas Padjadjaran Identifies Key Factors for Quality of Life in First-Year Nursing Students, Supporting SDGs 3 and 4

The first semester of university often marks a period of major transition for nursing students, with new academic expectations, clinical responsibilities, and social environments creating both opportunities and challenges. These adjustments can significantly impact students’ mental health, self-esteem, and quality of life.

In a recent study, led by Maria Komariah, S.Kp.,M.Kes., Ph.D. and colleagues from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran, An-Najah National University, Palestine, Srinakharinwirot University, Thailand, Universitas ‘Aisyiyah Bandung,, conducted a cross-sectional survey of 300 first-semester nursing students from multiple nursing education centers in Indonesia. Using validated instruments, WHOQOL-BREF, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Perceived Stress Scale, the team analyzed the relationships between health status, self-esteem, stress, and quality of life.

Results showed that students with better health status and realistic alignment between expectations, goals, and standards reported higher quality of life. Self-esteem emerged as a crucial factor, strongly associated with positive outcomes, even for students experiencing moderate stress.

These findings contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by promoting mental health awareness and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through enhanced student support systems. The researchers recommend that universities strengthen counseling services, expand mentoring programs, and encourage supportive family engagement to help students adapt successfully and achieve both personal and academic growth.
