Led by Unpad Nursing Researchers, New Review Highlights the Power of Early Mobilization in Orthopedic Surgery Recovery
A new scoping review led by Putri Rhamelani, researchers from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran, explores the importance of early mobilization for patients recovering from orthopedic surgery. The research team, led by Putri Rhamelani and colleagues, examined existing literature to map out effective strategies that help patients regain mobility, reduce complications, and shorten hospital stays.
Their review highlights five main interventions: motion-based therapy, progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), weight-bearing exercises, optimal positioning, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). Among these, motion-based therapy and PMR were most frequently applied and consistently linked with positive outcomes such as restored range of motion within 6 weeks post-surgery.
This work reinforces the vital role of nurses in implementing multidisciplinary recovery strategies and contributes to evidence-based practice in postoperative orthopedic care. It also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.
