Effectiveness of Transtheoretical Model-Based Psychoeducation in Reducing Depression Among Coronary Heart Disease Patients: A Quasi-Experimental Study in Indonesia
Researchers from Universitas Padjadjaran, Iyus Yosep,S.Kp.,M.Si.,M.Sc.Ph.D., collaborated with Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Keperawatan PPNI Bandung in a recent quasi-experimental study investigating the effectiveness of a psychoeducation program based on the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) to reduce depression among patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). Depression is a common psychological comorbidity in CHD patients, significantly impacting their recovery and quality of life.
The study involved 80 CHD patients hospitalized in a coronary care unit in West Java, Indonesia. Participants in the intervention group attended seven psychoeducational sessions targeting various stages of behavioral change. Depression severity was measured using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) before and after the intervention.
Findings showed a significant reduction in depression scores among the intervention group, with the mean HDRS score decreasing from 13.79 pre-intervention to 10.16 post-intervention (p < 0.0001). Most symptom subscales showed improvement, except for insomnia, somatic/genital symptoms, and weight loss. These results suggest that TTM-based psychoeducation can effectively complement standard medical care by addressing psychological well-being and improving overall outcomes in CHD patients.
This research supports integrated care approaches aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), promoting mental health as an essential component of chronic disease management.
