A Scoping Review of Palliative Care Education for Preregistration Student Nurses in the Asia Pacific Region

Faculty of Nursing UNPAD Researchers Lead Scoping Review on Palliative Care Education in the Asia-Pacific Region

Palliative care is essential in improving the quality of life for patients with life-threatening illnesses and their families, yet access remains limited in many lower-middle-income countries. A new scoping review led by researchers from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD) explores the state of palliative care education for preregistration nursing students in the Asia-Pacific region.

Led by Hana Rizmadewi Agustina,S.Kp.,MN, Ph.D., and colleagues form Faculty of Nursing Universitas Padjadjaran, in collaboration with College of Nursing, Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, Kuwait, Universitas Padjadjaran Hospital, the study emphasizes the urgent need to integrate core palliative care competencies, holistic care, conceptual knowledge, communication, collaboration, and emotional preparedness, into nursing curricula.

The review, which analyzed 23 articles published between 2012 and 2023, identified several challenges, including limited resources, insufficiently trained educators, and inadequate clinical placements. However, it also found that positive clinical experiences and exposure to palliative care environments significantly enhance students’ competencies and attitudes.

The study aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 4: Quality Education, by advocating for comprehensive and standardized palliative care education.
