Innovative Nursing Strategies to Reduce Violent Behavior in Schizophrenia: Insights from a Global Scoping Review

Managing violent behavior in individuals with schizophrenia remains a complex clinical challenge that extends beyond medication. A recent scoping review, led by Iyus Yosep,S.Kp.,M.Si.,M.Sc.Ph.D., and colleagues from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran, synthesizes global evidence on psychosocial nursing interventions that effectively address this critical issue.

Published in BMC Nursing (2025), this review examined 12 studies from the past five years and identified five key nursing strategies: logotherapy, assertive therapy, forgiveness therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), social skills training (SST), and assertive communication combined with de-escalation techniques. These approaches demonstrate promising outcomes in reducing violent behaviors by addressing patients’ psychological and social needs holistically.

The study highlights the essential role of nurses as frontline providers in implementing these interventions, underscoring the need for enhanced training and support to integrate psychosocial therapies into daily clinical practice. This comprehensive review also calls for future research with more rigorous designs to better understand the mechanisms behind successful interventions.

This work aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by promoting mental health care approaches that protect individuals and communities, ensuring safer and more effective treatment for vulnerable populations.
