Enhancing End-of-Life Care in Pediatric Intensive Care Units: Insights from a Systematic Integrative Review

A recent comprehensive review, conducted by researchers from Universitas Padjadjaran and international collaborators with experts from the UK and Canada, sheds light on the essential components of end-of-life care in Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs). The study synthesizes findings from 21 papers exploring perspectives of healthcare professionals and families on care during the critical final stages of life for seriously ill children.

The review identifies three core elements: early assessment of the transition to end-of-life, collaborative decision-making with parents, and tailored care processes during and after the dying phase. Emphasizing respect for family beliefs and rituals, the study advocates for a multidisciplinary approach, including palliative care teams, to optimize compassionate care.

This work supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 by promoting quality healthcare and dignified end-of-life experiences for vulnerable pediatric patients and their families.
