Reducing Self-Harm in Adolescents through Evidence-Based Interventions
Self-harm among adolescents is a growing global concern with deep psychological and social implications. A newly published scoping review titled “Exploring Effective Interventions to Reduce Self-Harm Behavior in Adolescents” systematically maps out various strategies proven to prevent and reduce self-harm in youth.
Led by Ns. Kurniawan, M.Kep., Sp.Kep.J., from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran, this collaborative study involved experts in mental health and pediatric nursing, highlighting interventions such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT-DEA), Functional Imagery Training (FIT), Mobile Peer Support Apps, and more. These interventions focus on emotional regulation, peer-based support, and post-discharge care strategies.
This review aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, particularly in promoting mental health in adolescents. The findings serve as a practical guide for health professionals, especially nurses, to adopt and tailor effective, evidence-based interventions in clinical and community settings.
