Faculty of Nursing UNPAD Study Highlights the Hidden Threat of Diabetes-Tuberculosis Coexistence
A new scoping review led by Siti Rissaadah from the Master of Nursing Study Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), together with Nursiswati, S.Kp, M.Kep.,Sp.KMB., and Tuti Pahria, S.Kp.,M.,Kes., Ph.D., from Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, reveals alarming evidence:
Patients with DM-TB tend to have worse glycemic control compared to those with diabetes alone. This poor control not only slows recovery but also increases the risk of treatment failure, multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), and prolonged illness.
The review, which covered 16 studies across global datasets, found that early detection of TB, consistent blood sugar monitoring, and integrated treatment approaches are crucial for improving outcomes. Without this, the fight against TB, especially in patients with diabetes, faces a serious uphill battle.
This research aligns with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, calling for stronger health systems to manage dual disease burdens in communities.
