Enhancing Recovery for Postoperative Orthopedic Patients: Faculty of Nursing Universitas Padjadjaran Leads in Identifying Key Learning Needs for Discharge Planning

Researchers from the Faculty of Nursing Universitas Padjadjaran, Urip Rahayu, S.Kp.,M.Kep. Prof. Kusman Ibrahim,S.Kp.,MNS.,Ph.D., in collaboration with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung, Herry Herman, dr., SpOT., PhD., undertook a comprehensive scoping review to explore the educational needs essential for effective discharge planning.

The review synthesized evidence from multiple studies sourced through major databases including PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, focusing on postoperative orthopedic patients’ learning requirements. Seven critical domains emerged: pain management; wound care and infection prevention; recognizing and managing complications; mobility and rehabilitation guidance; resuming daily activities to enhance quality of life; medication adherence and health monitoring; and the role of digital tools and family support in fostering sustained recovery.

Findings highlighted significant gaps in current patient education, particularly in pain control strategies, early detection of complications, and ensuring robust post-discharge support. This study underscores the imperative for structured and personalized discharge education programs to optimize recovery outcomes, reduce rehospitalization, and empower patients in self-care management.

This work aligns with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by promoting evidence-based patient education that supports safer transitions from hospital to home care, ultimately improving recovery outcomes and quality of life.
