Pangandaran, January 4, 2025 – Padjadjaran University, through the Faculty of Nursing (PSDKU) Pangandaran, implemented a Community Service (PPM) program entitled “Stunting-Free Shop: A Nutrition Education Program for Parents and Families in Preparing Nutritious and Affordable Food Menus” as an effort to reduce stunting in Karangbenda Village, Karangbenda Regency. Pangandaran.”
Stunting has significant long-term implications for child development. In addition to physical impacts, stunting also affects cognitive development and learning abilities (Black et al., 2013).
Karangbenda Village is one of 16 villages at risk of stunting across Pangandaran Regency. This is outlined in the Attachment to Pangandaran Regent’s Decree Number: KS.03.01.01/Ktps.154-Huk/2023 dated March 17, 2023. Based on the latest information, in Parigi District, Pangandaran Regency, there are significant data on stunting cases. In Karangbenda Village, there are 64 families at risk of stunting and 21 cases of stunted children, with a prevalence of 7.05%.
Given the situation and location of the Community Empowerment (PPM) program in the Parigi area, which has a relatively high prevalence of stunting compared to other areas in Pangandaran, and the lack of knowledge about stunting and anemia in adolescents, the PPM Team, led by Siti Ulfah, Rifa’atul Fitri, S.Kep., Ners., MNS, along with two lecturers and three students, conducted community outreach activities and further interventions related to groups at risk of stunting. The target audiences were pregnant women and toddlers who showed signs of stunting, as well as adolescents as future mothers, who need in-depth knowledge about stunting and anemia.
The program was implemented through observation and education using instruments such as materials related to stunting, anemia, and iron supplements (TTD). These materials were packaged into a “Pocket Book” and then distributed to several junior high schools (SMP) in the Parigi sub-district.
As a result, 18 of the 20 toddlers who received the milk experienced weight and height gains, while pregnant women showed weight gain in line with nutritional needs. Among adolescents, there was an increase in knowledge about nutrition and early stunting prevention.
This activity also collaborated with the Parigi Community Health Center through the “Ausrem” (School-Age Children and Adolescents) program, which routinely provides iron supplements to adolescent girls. This effort aligns with the national target of reducing the prevalence of stunting. stunting to 14% in 2024.
