Effectiveness of Awake Prone Positioning in Non-Intubated ARDS Patients: A Comprehensive Meta-Analysis
Researchers from Universitas Padjadjaran, including Cecep Eli Kosasih, S.Kp.,MNS, Ph.D. and Prof. Henny Suzana Mediani, S.Kp.,MNg.,Ph.D., collaborated with Mayapada Hospital Surabaya, Universitas Katolik Musi Charitas, and Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Kesehatan Panca Bhakti to conduct a comprehensive meta-analysis on Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), a condition that became even more critical during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The study assessed the impact of awake prone positioning (APP) on oxygenation, intubation rates, and mortality in non-intubated ARDS patients. Analyzing data from 39 studies, mostly involving COVID-19 cases treated outside intensive care units, the findings show that APP significantly improves oxygenation (PaO2/FiO2 and SpO2/FiO2 ratios), reduces the risk of intubation by 34%, and lowers mortality by 38%.
The research also examined moderating factors such as severity of respiratory failure, oxygen delivery device, BMI, positioning technique, medication use, APP duration, and follow-up time. While APP showed no significant effect on hospital stay length or adverse events, the data reinforce its safety and clinical value.
This work contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3 by supporting life-saving interventions that enhance respiratory outcomes in critical care settings.
