UNPAD Researchers Explore the Emotional Journey of Indonesian Widows After Losing Their Husbands to Critical Illness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n A qualitative case study conducted by Ayu Prawesti Priambodo, S.Kep.Ners.,M.Kep. and colleagues from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjadjaran. Using in-depth interviews and thematic analysis, the researchers explored the lived experiences of Indonesian wives after losing their husbands to acute medical conditions. The study revealed four core themes: experiencing the pain of the loss, searching for the meaning of being lost, embracing the new being, and exploring unmet needs in a widow\u2019s life. These findings reflect how grieving is not only an emotional process but also a social and existential journey shaped by gender, family roles, and cultural expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The women interviewed described grief as overwhelming, yet often hidden. While society expects them to “be strong,” these widows expressed a deep need for emotional support, understanding, and companionship during their bereavement. Many found purpose through their children, who became the reason to re-engage with life after a period of emptiness and isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This research provides valuable insights into the psychological and social impacts of loss, especially among women, and contributes to the broader goals of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality). It calls for more compassionate, gender-sensitive approaches to post-loss care in Indonesia’s healthcare system, particularly in nursing and mental health services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
