Universitas Padjadjaran Publishes Scoping Review on Factors Associated with Delayed Extubation After Cardiac Surgery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Delayed extubation (DE), the prolonged need for mechanical ventilation following cardiac surgery, is a significant clinical concern linked to increased morbidity, mortality, longer ICU stays, and higher healthcare costs. Researchers from Universitas Padjadjaran, led by Regina Indah Kumalasari and colleagues, conducted a comprehensive scoping review analyzing eight studies with over 13,800 patients to identify key factors influencing DE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The review categorized influential factors into three groups: preoperative factors (age \u2265 60 years, ejection fraction < 50%), intraoperative factors (surgery duration \u2265 7 hours, use of intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), sedatives), and postoperative factors (B-type natriuretic peptide \u2265 806 pg\/mL). The leading causes of delayed extubation were hemodynamic instability requiring increased inotropic support, reduced consciousness or drowsiness, and postoperative bleeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Understanding these factors enables healthcare providers to optimize extubation timing and improve patient recovery after cardiac surgery.
