Loneliness among older adults is a growing global health challenge, affecting approximately 26% of seniors worldwide, according to a comprehensive meta-analysis conducted in collaboration by Universitas Padjadjaran through lecturers Prof. Hartiah Haroen, S.Kp.,MNg.,M.Kes, Ph.D., Sandra Pebrianti, S.Kep.,Ners,M.Kep., and Hasniatisari Harun, S.Kep.,Ners.,M.Kep., alongside researchers from Universitas Halu Oleo and other institutional partner.<\/p>\n

The study analyzed data from 70 studies covering over 460,000 older adults across six continents. Notably, loneliness prevalence was highest in North America (38%) and lowest in Oceania (13%). Key risk factors identified include cognitive decline, poor health, being female, depression, widowhood, living in rural areas, and institutionalization. Conversely, being married, male, and living independently significantly reduces loneliness risk.<\/p>\n

This research underscores the urgent need for targeted, culturally sensitive interventions to address loneliness among seniors, a priority closely aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 11.<\/p>\n
